Struthers Parkinson's Center
Clinic Supervisor

Joan Gardner RN, BSN is the clinic supervisor at the Struthers Parkinson’s Center in Minneapolis, a National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) Center of Excellence.  Joan is recognized as a clinical expert in nursing care for individuals and families living with Parkinson’s.  She serves as the nursing faculty for the National Parkinson Foundation program “Allied Team Training for Parkinson.”   Identifying the necessity for improved staff awareness of the unique care needs for Parkinson’s, Joan co-produced the TULIPS program, an educational toolkit for direct care providers in 2006.  In 2012, this toolkit evolved into the educational foundation for the Struthers Parkinson’s Care Network, building sustainable partnerships with community-based facilities and agencies dedicated to the delivery of high quality care for persons with Parkinson’s throughout Minnesota.  This unique program educates “site champions” who in turn educate their staff.  Ongoing communications via phone conferences, webinars, site visits and reported outcomes are also included in the program.   Additionally, in 2014, Joan co-authored the NPF advanced stage Parkinson’s website CareMAP, and the companion Caring and Coping Workbook, designed to inform families and in-home care providers about Parkinson’s care.
